Have You Always Felt Older Than Your Life?
Some people move through life with a strange sense of familiarity.
Not that they have all the answers.
Not that they are somehow “more evolved” than anyone else.
But there is a feeling…I have been here before.
A sense that certain truths are not being learned for the first time, but remembered.
You may have felt this as a child. You may have looked around at the world and wondered why so much of what mattered to other people felt strangely unimportant to you.
You may have been drawn to older people, deeper conversations, nature, Spirit, mystery, or solitude long before you had language for any of it.
And perhaps you have spent much of your life asking: Why do I feel so different?
Beloved, perhaps the question is not, What is wrong with me?
Perhaps it is: What am I remembering?
When I use the phrase old soul, I don’t mean that one soul is better, wiser, or more important than another.
I think of it more as a soul that seems to carry a certain depth of memory, sensitivity, perspective, and spiritual awareness into this lifetime. And often, that depth can be both a gift and a challenge.
Here are a few ways it may show up.
1. You genuinely need solitude.
There is a difference between withdrawing because you are hurt and choosing solitude because it nourishes you.
For many old souls, being alone does not necessarily feel lonely. There can be tremendous comfort in your own company.
A quiet house. A walk through the trees. Sitting near the ocean. Being somewhere you can finally hear yourself think—and perhaps hear something deeper than thought. You may actually feel less alone in those moments because you become more aware of your connection to Spirit, nature, your Guides, your ancestors, or simply the intelligence moving through life itself.
You don’t always need noise in order to feel connected. Sometimes silence is where you feel most accompanied.
2. You have always sensed there is more going on than what you can see.
Maybe you were drawn to spiritual questions before anyone around you understood why.
You looked at the stars and felt something. You walked into a room and immediately sensed the energy. You had vivid dreams. Synchronicities followed you. You felt connected to people you had just met.
Or you simply knew that the visible world could not possibly be the whole story. For some people, spirituality begins as a belief. For others, it begins as a recognition. Something inside you says: I know there is more. And eventually, that knowing starts asking you to explore it.
3. You know things you cannot always explain.
This is one I hear constantly from intuitive women. You simply know.
You may not know how you know. You may not have evidence yet. You may even argue with yourself about it.
But something arrives whole. A feeling about someone. A sense that a situation is going to change.
A knowing about what someone needs. A truth that seems to appear before the mind has had time to assemble it.
And then, of course, the questioning begins. Was that really intuition? Did I make that up? Am I just overthinking?
This is where so many intuitive women lose confidence. Not because they are not receiving.
But because what they receive can feel so natural that they dismiss it.
4. You are drawn to Spirit—but you also know you came here to live.
To me, this is one of the most beautiful qualities of a mature spiritual life. Eventually, spirituality is not about escaping the human experience. It is about inhabiting it more fully. You may love meditation, channeling, energy, astrology, mystical teachings, or communion with Spirit. And yet there is also a knowing:
I am here for a reason.
I am here to bring something through.
To create.
To serve.
To love.
To teach.
To write.
To raise children.
To build something.
To help someone.
To make Spirit tangible through the way I actually live.
The deeper path is not choosing between Heaven and Earth. It is learning how to bring them together.
5. People have always come to you.
Maybe you noticed this when you were very young. People told you things. Asked your opinion.
Came to you when they were hurting. Trusted you with parts of themselves they didn’t share with everyone. And sometimes you wondered: Why are they telling me this?
But perhaps something in them recognized something in you. A capacity to listen. To see beyond the immediate problem. To sense what is underneath the words. To hold complexity. To see the larger pattern. This can become exhausting when you don’t have boundaries.
But when developed consciously, it can become one of your greatest gifts.
6. You may have spent much of your life feeling slightly out of step.
Many old souls describe never quite feeling that they fit neatly into their age group, their family, their culture, or the expectations placed upon them. As a child, perhaps you preferred conversations with adults. As an adult, perhaps you still find yourself less interested in what is popular and more interested in what is real.
You may be deeply social and still feel different. You may have wonderful friends and still carry a sense that very few people truly understand the way you experience life. That can feel lonely. But it can also be the beginning of something important. Because eventually, the question changes from: “Where do I fit?”
to: “Where am I being asked to create belonging?”
7. The simple things matter more to you than they probably “should.”
There can come a point when you realize that many of the things the world tells you to chase simply do not feed you. And that is not because you lack ambition. It may be because your soul has become very clear about what actually matters.
The older I get, the more I believe wisdom often brings us back to simplicity. Not because life becomes simple.
But because we become less willing to confuse complexity with meaning.
So what do you do with all of this?
This, to me, is where the conversation gets interesting. Because being spiritually sensitive, intuitive, or an “old soul” is not the destination.
What are you going to do with what you carry?
Perhaps your sensitivity is asking to become more discerning.
Perhaps your knowing is asking to become trust.
Perhaps your compassion needs boundaries so it can become sustainable.
Perhaps your spiritual experiences are asking to become a practice.
Perhaps the wisdom you have gathered is asking to become something you teach, write, create, or embody.
Perhaps you are not here simply to know more.
Perhaps you are here to bring something through.
And Beloved, you do not need to prove that you are an old soul. You do not need another label.
You do not need to be more spiritual than anyone else.
The real question is much simpler:
What has your soul been quietly preparing you to live?
Because the deepest spiritual maturity is not found in how much you know about past lives, Guides, energy, astrology, or the unseen. It is found in how you love.
How you listen. How you choose. How you hold your boundaries. How you use your gifts. How you walk into a room.
How you respond when life does not go your way. And how willing you are to become the human expression of what your soul already knows.
Maybe you have never called yourself an “old soul.”
That’s okay.
But if something in this felt strangely familiar…perhaps you are not discovering something new.
Perhaps you are remembering something ancient within yourself.

A spiritual awakening is a profound initiation, often sudden and unexpected, where we awaken to previously hidden or unknown aspects of our life, world, and universe. Most people live in a kind of amnesia, believing the world is entirely physical and governed solely by matter, with no spiritual side at all.
A spiritual awakening occurs when the mind opens and becomes aware of something "more" beyond the mundane. This awakening typically sparks a quest for learning, leading to a ravenous need to read and explore spiritual and metaphysical subjects. This journey is nearly always pleasant and rewarding, with many avenues to explore and teachers to learn from.
The topic of spiritual awakening is broad, so let's break it down into the various stages one goes through on this journey of the soul. These stages can also serve as signs that you are experiencing an awakening.
The Wake-Up Call
A sudden realization that there is more to life than the physical world. This can be triggered by a significant life event, a personal crisis, or a moment of clarity.
The Search for Meaning
An intense curiosity about the nature of reality and a desire to understand spiritual concepts. This stage often involves reading books, attending workshops, and exploring different spiritual traditions.
Self-Discovery
A period of introspection where you begin to uncover your true self, stripping away societal conditioning and false beliefs. This stage can be both exhilarating and challenging as you confront your inner truths.
The Dark Night of the Soul
A phase of deep inner turmoil and confusion, where old beliefs and identities crumble. This can feel like a spiritual or existential crisis but is a necessary part of the awakening process.
Integration
Starting to integrate new insights and wisdom into your daily life. You begin to live more authentically, aligning your actions with your spiritual values.
Synchronicity and Guidance
Experiencing meaningful coincidences and feeling guided by a higher power. You become more attuned to the signs and messages from the universe.
Connection to All
A deep sense of interconnectedness with all life. You feel a strong bond with nature, other people, and the cosmos, understanding that everything is part of a greater whole.
Living Your Purpose
Feeling a strong sense of purpose and direction in your life. You start to contribute to the world in meaningful ways, using your unique talents and gifts.
Enlightenment
Achieving a state of inner peace, wisdom, and compassion. You live in harmony with yourself and the universe, fully awakened to your true nature.
Conclusion
These stages are not always linear and can be experienced in different orders or revisited multiple times. Spiritual awakening is a deeply personal journey, unique to each individual. Recognizing these stages can help you understand where you are on your path and provide reassurance that you are not alone in your experiences. Embrace the journey and allow yourself to grow and evolve spiritually.
