Inspiration, Creativity and the World of Spirit

Sep 12, 2022

Help!

I’m Feeling Stuck!

WHAT IF YOUR CREATIVITY ISN’T COMING FROM YOU ALONE?

Have you ever had an idea arrive so completely that you wondered where it came from?

Not an idea you sat down and worked hard to create. It simply…arrived.

Something you suddenly felt compelled to make, write, teach, say, begin—or become.

And for just a moment, before your mind got involved, there was this wonderful sense of: Oh. There you are.

I’ve come to believe that some of our most creative moments are also some of our most intuitive ones. We tend to think of creativity as something the mind manufactures. But anyone who has ever created something that truly came alive knows there are moments when it doesn’t feel that way at all.

It feels as though you are receiving. Something moves toward you and ultimately through you. And if you are quiet enough, available enough, willing enough…you catch it.

Maybe this is why creativity and spirituality have always felt so closely connected to me. Both ask us to listen.

Both ask us to become receptive. Both ask us, at some point, to stop controlling the outcome long enough for something we could not have planned to appear.

And both require trust.

Because Spirit rarely hands us the finished manuscript. Or the completed business. Or the entire map for our life.

More often, we receive a thread, or a crumb...

* Write this.

* Make the call.

* Teach this.

* Make that.

And then our very human mind says: Why? What will happen? Is this actually a good idea?

What if nobody wants it? What if I’m making this up?

And there it is again—that delicate moment between receiving something and trusting what we received.

Perhaps inspiration is one of the ways Spirit speaks.

I think we sometimes make intuition much more mysterious than it needs to be.

We imagine that receiving Guidance should involve an unmistakable voice from somewhere beyond us.

And yes, there can be extraordinary experiences. But so often Guidance enters our lives quietly. As curiosity.

As inspiration. As a persistent idea. As a creative impulse that will not leave us alone. As the feeling that there is something we are supposed to bring into form, even when we cannot yet explain why.

I have experienced this again and again in my own life. Something begins as a whisper. And sometimes I recognize it immediately. Other times I argue with it. I want another sign. I want more confirmation, or

I want Spirit to provide the detailed project plan, timeline and evidence that everything will work out before I say yes. 😊

But that isn’t usually how the relationship works.

Guidance offers something. And then we are asked to enter into relationship (take a step or an action!) with what we have received. Because inspiration without participation remains only possibility.

You may be carrying something that wants to come through you.

This is where I think our relationship with the World of Spirit becomes incredibly practical. Maybe you have always felt that you came here with something to do. Not necessarily some enormous “Divine Mission” written across the sky. Perhaps it is quieter than that. There may be something you are here to create. Someone you are here to love.

Something you are here to teach. A way of healing a pattern in your family. A new way of parenting. A body of work. A conversation that changes someone's life.

We tend to measure purpose by size. Spirit does not necessarily do that. Sometimes the most important expression of your soul happens in a room with one other person. And only sometimes it reaches thousands.

Your job is to become available for what wants to move through you.

And being intuitive is not enough.

This is something I feel strongly about.

We can receive extraordinary Guidance and still do absolutely nothing with it. We can receive the same message twenty times and keep asking for sign number twenty-one.

We can have the dream.

Feel the nudge.

Know the truth.

And then override it because it feels inconvenient, frightening, impractical—or because somebody else doesn't understand.

That is why intuitive development is not simply about becoming better at receiving messages.

It is about becoming someone who can recognize, discern and eventually trust what she receives.

There is a very real difference between: I had an intuitive experience and I have developed a relationship with my Guidance.

Relationship takes time and PRACTICE!

And it takes a willingness to notice how Spirit uniquely speaks through you. Because your language of Guidance may not look anything like mine.

You may suddenly begin writing and realize twenty minutes later that something far wiser than your thinking mind has been participating in the conversation. And you may experience several of these at once.

Do you recognize your own soul language when it arrives?

Creativity requires both Heaven and Earth. This may be the part we sometimes forget. Receiving is only half of the creative process. We can sit in meditation all day receiving magnificent ideas from Spirit. Eventually, somebody still has to open the laptop. Pick up the paintbrush. Make the phone call. Have the conversation. Create the program.

Speak the boundary.

Spirit inspires. The human embodies.

And I think this is where the spiritual and physical worlds beautifully meet.

Not somewhere far away. but right here...and right now. Through us.

You become the meeting place. Your intuition receives. Your heart recognizes. Your discernment listens.

And then your hands do something with what has been given.

That is creativity.

That is embodiment.

And, to me, that is one of the deepest meanings of becoming a channel.

Beloved, perhaps you are not searching for your purpose.

Perhaps your purpose has been speaking to you for years.

Through what fascinates you.

Through what keeps returning.

Through what breaks your heart.

Through what brings you alive.

Through the things you cannot seem to stop thinking about.

Through the ideas that arrive when you are walking, showering, driving, meditating—or doing absolutely nothing.

Through the quiet knowing that says: 'There is more here.'

Maybe the real question is

“What has been trying to come through me that I have not yet trusted enough to follow?”

Sit with that one for a bit...and allow it to drop into your heart.

And listen.

You do not have to know the entire plan.

You don't have to know where it leads.

You don't even have to call yourself intuitive yet.

You only need enough willingness to notice the first quiet thing that comes.

Because sometimes Guidance gives you an entire vision.

And sometimes, it gives you one thread and waits to see if you will pick it up.🌹🕊️

If You Feel Ready to Go Deeper

If this conversation feels familiar—if you know you are receiving something but want to become clearer about how Guidance speaks through you, how to discern what you receive, and how to trust it without constantly second-guessing yourself—this is exactly the work we explore together.

My "Become the Channel" experience is a live, beautifully interactive journey into developing a more conscious, grounded relationship with your own Guidance.

Not so someone else can become the authority over your spiritual life. Quite the opposite. So that you become more fluent in the language of your own connection.

TAKE A CLOSER LOOK...EXPLORE BECOME THE CHANNEL

And whether or not you take that next step, I want to leave you with one question:

What has Spirit been quietly asking you to create, say, begin—or become?

Perhaps you already know.

Many blessings on your path!

Are you stuck?

Can’t seem to get yourself to do what you need to do?

Even worse, you can’t seem to do what you love?

Maybe you’re like Frances, who got so tired of not having time for her song-writing career that she took three months off and rented a house at the beach to really work on her next album. After a few months enjoying days at the beach, all she had to show for it was a great collection of sea shells. Or maybe you’re like Kathy, who walked by the piles of papers on her desk day after day, turning her head away, and finally shoved them into a desk drawer so she wouldn’t have to see them.

Whether it’s something you want to do, or something you have to do, it’s tough when you’re feeling stuck. You want so badly to change, to get moving, get it done… but you don’t. You make a plan, a resolution: Finally, this time, you’ve made a plan to just GSD (get s**t done!)

And then it doesn’t happen… again.

I remember so well the torment of being someone who just didn’t do what I needed to do. The more important a task was, the less likely I was to do it. The experts in organizing people say: “Start your day by doing your most important project.” Oh, yeah? For me, the most important was the last thing I’d be likely to do.

Writing is the worst. If someone asks me to write something, a letter, a proposal, an article, I am in deep trouble. First, I will cheerfully say, “Sure, no problem.” Then I won’t do it. Day after day, not doing it, thinking I should, feeling bad about not doing it, hearing the voice of shame and blame in my head get louder and louder, until I’m avoiding the whole topic because I don’t want to hear that voice.

And the funny thing is, I really want to write. I want to write a book, to be an author. I’ve wanted to be a writer for the longest time. So what I most wanted was the very thing I wasn’t doing.

Isn’t this a strange phenomena? And also a mystery, isn’t it? How is it, that we don’t do what we want to do? Self-sabotage? Fear? Those are the obvious answers. But this doesn’t really help to get me unstuck!

Calling the problem self-sabotage or fear doesn’t help me in the slightest, either.

Criticizing myself doesn’t work at all.

What is it that can help?

What is the secret?

Because I teach and coach others to learn how to release, I pretty much work on practicing what I teach…so now I can get things done, when I need to. I still procrastinate—like tonight, I am turning in assignments at the last minute…but they are DONE! Check. I feel grateful to get it done and checked off my list.

I cannot say that now I write easily, it’s still an effort for me…but I do my best, and my best just has to be good enough!

Ironically, I am the co-author of two books, one a bestseller. I’ve written countless articles, and client emails that go out every week…I am much better when I am on a deadline, it seems that’s when things get done in twenty minutes. And I now teach workshops and classes in Releasing Barriers, Letting Go, and Getting Unstuck! Another irony for you.

Basically, I’ve boiled the method down to tree secrets to getting unstuck:

  1. Let Go of Your Assumptions. What are you assuming? The biggest block to getting unstuck is thinking you already know “why” you’re stuck. Frances thought the reason she wasn’t working on her album was that she was scared of being a failure. It turned out to be something quite different.

  1. Get into your body. Your conscious mind holds about one-tenth of your intelligence. Your whole body, including your mind, holds all of it. Most of us cut off the full power of our brilliance by walking around cut off from our bodies. Take some time to feel your feet, your seat, your breathing.

  1. Don’t judge it - get curious instead. The first temptation is to judge: “It’s just the lazy part of me that doesn’t want to.” But wait—don’t judge! Being judgmental is going to shut down the lines of communication that we need to have open. Instead of judging, get curious. The truth is, you don’t know what or why this part of you is not doing the action. Let your genuine curiosity awaken and LISTEN! Listen to the part of you that doesn’t want to do the action. How? By allowing it to show up as a bodily felt sense. Take some time, sense into your body, and invite this part to show up. Maybe it will come as a tightness in your chest, or a constriction in your throat. Take time; be patient. Once you can feel it there, you can ask it: What are you worried about? What are you trying to help me with?

If you’re in a bind, and you really need help getting unstuck, sit down, get quiet and become willing to be transformed.

Frances called me in a panic. She was two months into her three-month writing break and all she had to show was a great collection of shells. “I know it’s just fear,” she told me. “I’m afraid to find out I’m a failure.”

I suggested she set aside her assumptions for a while, and approach the situation with curiosity. “Maybe that’s what it is,” I said, “but let’s find out.”

When she finally got quiet and brought her awareness into her body, she could feel the not-wanting-to-write in her chest, like a drawstring pulling tight. I guided her in a process of sensing what it was worried about, and what it was trying to help her understand. After about fifteen minutes, she felt a shift. Her breathing deepened and the feeling in her chest released. “Wow,” she said. “It says it feels I have something precious inside, and it doesn’t want that to get trampled on.” I suggested she let it know she heard it. “Yes, I can do that,” she said, smiling.

Frances’ whole body posture changed. Her shoulders were up and her eyes were bright and relaxed. “This feels really different,“ she said. Later I found out she had finished writing her album, and it feels like her most powerful, vulnerable work yet.

Many blessings on your path!
